There is no need to invest in tools that you may use only infrequently - like that extension ladder or drywall lift. For a modest annual fee (currently $25), you can join Neighborhood Finance Corporation's Tool Lending Library. Members can borrow tools for up to three days at a time and receive technical assistance for a variety of home repair and maintenance projects.

Anyone who lives in an eligible area of Des Moines (which includes most of the city) can join as long as they meet at least one of the following membership requirements:

• Resident of an owner-occupied single-family home in an NFC area

• Non-profit organizations
• Religious institutions
• Schools
• City/neighborhood associations

Membership includes unlimited use of any tools, equipment, and books or videos in the Tool Lending Library. Technical assistance is also available on proper use and care of the tools.

• Belt and orbital sanders
• Cordless drills
• Drywall lift and taping tools
• Tile tools
• Portable welder
• Snow blower and lawn mowers
• Power saws (compound miter, circular, wet)
• Wet/dry vac
