The Friends of Historic Preservation in Iowa City runs the "Architectural Salvage Barn," full of affordable salvage items. A partial list of the items in stock includes:

  • Doors

  • Floors
  • Windows
  • Plumbing
  • Trim, and
  • Hardware

They also stock some specialty items like a full wood stairway and a beautiful wood pediment.

It's not in Des Moines, but it has been recommended by a Des Moines Rehabbers Club member as a good resource for finding historically appropriate pieces. The Salvage Barn is located at the Iowa City Landfill. To get to the Iowa City Landfill, take 80 east to 380/27 south. Exit Hebl Avenue and turn west to the landfill - follow the signs to the Architectural Salvage Barn.
