Tools for reglazing a historic double-hung window, once the sash has been removed from the window frame:

• Scrapers (various sizes)

• Utility knife and straight razor holder (not shown)
• Glazing knife (essentially a putty knife with an angle bend)
• Needlenose pliers

There is no need to invest in tools that you may use only infrequently - like that extension ladder or drywall lift. For a modest annual fee (currently $25), you can join Neighborhood Finance Corporation's Tool Lending Library. Members can borrow tools for up to three days at a time and receive technical assistance for a variety of home repair and maintenance projects.

Anyone who lives in an eligible area of Des Moines (which includes most of the city) can join as long as they meet at least one of the following membership requirements:

• Resident of an owner-occupied single-family home in an NFC area

• Non-profit organizations
• Religious institutions
• Schools
• City/neighborhood associations

You will need a good selection of both hand and power tools to build a deck. The list below gives a general idea of the scope of tools required.

Power Tools

• Circular Saw - if you buy cheap ones, you will also probably go through at least three blades

• Miter Saw - for cutting pickets and other finish work
• Cordless Drill - with at least two battery packs
  • Masonry bits - predrilling for masonry anchors (if required)

  • Spade bits - drilling holes for through-bolts at posts
